Regulations for the Food of Priests

Leviticus 22

YHWH spoke to Moses, saying, “You must tell Aaron and his sons to separate themselves from the holy things of the children of Israel, which they make holy to me, and that they not profane my holy name. I am YHWH.

“You are to tell them, ‘Throughout y’all’s generations if any of all y’all’s descendants approaches the holy things which the children of Israel make holy to YHWH, while he is unclean, that soul must be cut off from before me. I am YHWH.

“‘Any descendant of Aaron who is a skin disease or a discharge must not eat of the holy things until he is clean. Whoever touches anything that is unclean by the dead, or a man who has a seminal emission, or whoever touches any swarming thing that makes him unclean, or a man from who makes him unclean, whatever uncleanness he has— the person that touches any such thing will be unclean until the evening, and must not eat of the holy things unless he bathes his body in water. When the sun is down, he will become clean, and then he may eat of the holy things, because it is his food. He must not eat an animal that has died naturally or was torn by animals, and so become unclean by it. I am YHWH.

“‘They must follow my commandment, so they do not bear sin for it and die in it, if they profane it. I am YHWH who sanctifies them.

“‘No stranger is to eat of the holy thing: a foreigner residing with the priests, or a hired servant, is not to eat of the holy thing. But if a priest buys a soul, purchased by his money, he may eat of it, and those born in his house may eat of his food. If a priest’s daughter is married to man outside the priest’s family, she may not eat of the holy offerings. But if a priest’s daughter is a widow, or divorced, and has no child, and has returned to her father’s house as in her youth, she may eat of her father’s food. But no outsider may eat any of it.

“‘If a man eats something holy unintentionally, then he must add the fifth part of its value to it, and must give the holy thing to the priest. The priests must not profane the holy things of the children of Israel, which they offer to YHWH, and so cause them to bear the iniquity that brings guilt when they eat their holy things; for I am YHWH who sanctifies them.’”

Unacceptable Sacrifices

YHWH spoke to Moses, saying, “Your are to speak to Aaron, his sons, and all the children of Israel, and say to them, ‘Whoever is of the house of Israel, or of the foreigners in Israel, who offers his offering, whether it is any of their vows or any of their free will offerings, which they offer to YHWH for a burnt offering: for y’all to accepted, it must be a male without defect, from the bulls, the sheep, or the goats. But y’all must not offer anything with a defect, for it will not be accepted for y’all. Whoever offers a sacrifice of peace offerings to YHWH to accomplish a vow, or for a free will offering of the herd or of the flock, it msut be perfect to be accepted. It must have no defect. Y’all must not present to YHWH those that are blind, injured, maimed, having a wart, or a festering or running sore. Y’all must not put such a burnt offering on the altar to YHWH. Either a bull or a lamb that has any deformity or lacking in his parts, that you may offer for a free will offering, but for a vow it will not be accepted. Y’all must not offer to YHWH an animal with testicles that are bruised, crushed, torn, or cut. Y’all must not do this in y’all’s land. Y’all must not accept any of these from the hand of a foreigner to offer as the food of y’all’s God, because their corruption is in them. There is a defect in them. They will not be accepted for y’all.’”

YHWH spoke to Moses, saying, “When a bull, a sheep, or a goat is born, it will remain seven days with its mother. From the eighth day on it will be accepted for the offering of a burnt offering made to YHWH. Whether it is a cow or ewe, y’all must not kill it and its young on the same day.

“When y’all sacrifice a thanksgiving offering to YHWH, y’all are to sacrifice it so that y’all may be accepted. It must be eaten on the same day. Y’all are not to leave any of it until the morning. I am YHWH.

Y’all must keep my commandments and do them. I am YHWH. Y’all must not profane my holy name, for I will be made holy among the children of Israel. I am YHWH who makes y’all holy, who brought y’all out from the land of Egypt, to be y’all’s God. I am YHWH.”
