The Resurrection

Mark 16

When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might come and anoint him. Very early on the first day of the week, after the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They were saying among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the entrance to the tomb for us?” Looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back, though it was massive.

As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. He said to them, “Y’all don’t be alarmed. You* are looking for Jesus, the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him! But y’all must go and tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He goes before y’all into Galilee. There you* will see him, just as he told y’all.’”

Then they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.+16:8 A few manuscripts include the “shorter ending of Mark”:

[Many early manuscripts do not include the text of verses 9-20.]

The Longer Ending of Mark

[Now when he had risen early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons. She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept. When they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they didn’t believe.

After these things he appeared in another form to two of them as they were walking in the country. They went back and reported this to the others, but they didn’t believe them either.

Afterward, he appeared to the eleven themselves as they sat at the table. He rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they didn’t believe those who had seen him after he had risen. He said to them, Y’all go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; but whoever doesn’t believe will be condemned. These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; they will pick up snakes, and if they drink poison, it will not hurt them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will get well.”

So then, after the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. They went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word by the signs that followed. Amen.]
