Giving to the Poor
Matthew 6“Be careful that y’all don’t practice your* acts of righteousness before humans to be seen by them, or else y’all have no reward from your* Father who is in heaven. Therefore, when y’all give to the poor, don’t sound a trumpet before yourself, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to be honored by humans. Truly I tell y’all, they have received their reward. But when you give to the poor, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving will be in secret. Then your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
The Lord’s Prayer
“When y’all pray, y’all are not to be like the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, so that they may be seen by humans. Truly, I tell y’all, they have received their reward. But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret. Then your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. In praying, y’all are not to use vain repetitions as the ethnic groups do, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Therefore y’all are not to be like them, for your* Father knows the things y’all need before y’all ask him. This, then, is how y’all should pray:
“‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Let your empire come. Let your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.“For if y’all forgive other humans for their sins, your* heavenly Father will also forgive y’all. But if y’all don’t forgive humans, neither will your* Father forgive y’all’s sins.
Fasting
“Moreover, when y’all fast, don’t be like the hypocrites with sullen faces. For they disfigure their faces so that humans will notice them fasting. Truly I tell y’all, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that humans will not notice you fasting, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.
Treasures in Heaven
“Y’all should not store up for yourselves* treasures on the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal; but store up for yourselves* treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
“The eye is the lamp of the body. If therefore your eye is singular, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
“No one can serve two masters, for a person will hate the one and love the other, or else be devoted to one and despise the other. Y’all can’t serve both God and Mammon.
Do Not Worry
Therefore I tell y’all, don’t be anxious for your* life: what y’all will eat, or what y’all will drink; or about your* body, what y’all will wear. Isn’t life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Y’all look at the birds of the sky: they do not sow, reap, or gather into barns, yet your* heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t y’all much more valuable than them?
“Which of y’all by being anxious, can add one moment to their lifespan? Why are y’all anxious about clothing? Y’all think about the lilies of the field, how they grow. They don’t toil or spin, yet I tell y’all that even Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today exists and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, won’t he much more clothe y’all of little faith?
“Therefore y’all don’t worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’, ‘What will we drink?’ or, ‘What will we wear?’ For the ethnic groups seek after all these things, and y’all’s heavenly Father knows that y’all need all these things. But y’all seek first the Empire of God and ʜɪꜱ righteousness, and all these things will also be given to y’all. Therefore y’all are not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
