The Resurrection

John 20

On the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have laid him!”

So Peter and the other disciple went out, and they went toward the tomb. They both ran together. The other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. Stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths lying there but he didn’t go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and entered into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and the cloth that had been on his head. It was not lying with the linen cloths, but rolled up in a place by itself. So then the other disciple who arrived at the tomb first also went in. He saw and believed. For they did not yet they understand the Scripture that he must rise from the dead. So the disciples went back to their own homes.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

Now Mary was standing outside at the tomb weeping. As she wept, she bent down and looked into the tomb, and she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. They asked her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”

She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I don’t know where they have put him.” After she said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but didn’t realize that it was Jesus.

Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?”

Thinking he was the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will take him away.”

Jesus said to her, “Mary.”

She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means, “Teacher!”).

Jesus said to her, “Don’t hold on to me, for I haven’t yet ascended to my Father. Instead, go to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and y’all’s Father, to my God and y’all’s God.’”

Mary Magdalene went and proclaimed to disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and she told them what he said to her.

Jesus Makes an Appearance

On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, when disciples were together with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood in the middle of them and said, “Peace be with y’all.”

After he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Then Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with y’all. As the Father has sent me, I am sending y’all.” When he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, Y’all receive the Holy Spirit! If y’all forgive anyone’s sins, they have been forgiven them. If y’all retain anyone’s sins, they have been retained.”

Thomas’ Doubts Are Overcome

But Thomas (also called Didymus), one of the twelve, wasn’t with them when Jesus came. The other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the imprint of the nails and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

After eight days, again his disciples were inside and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood in the middle of them, and said, “Peace be with y’all.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”

Thomas answered, saying to him, “My Lord and my God!”

Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

The Purpose of John’s Gospel

Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not recorded in this scroll, but these have been written so that y’all may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing y’all may have life in his name.
