A Call to Remember

John 16

“I have told y’all this so that y’all won’t fall away. They will put y’all out of the synagogues. Yes, the time is coming that whoever kills y’all will think they are offering service to God. They will do these things because they have not known the Father or me. But I have told y’all these things so that when the time comes, y’all may remember that I told y’all about them. I didn’t tell y’all these things from the beginning, because I was with y’all. But now I am going to ʜɪᴍ who sent me, and none of y’all asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Rather because I have told y’all these things, sorrow has filled y’all’s heart. Nevertheless I tell y’all the truth: It is to y’all’s advantage that I go away. For if I don’t go away, the Counselor won’t come to y’all. But if I go, I will send ʜɪᴍ to y’all. When ʜᴇ has come, ʜᴇ will convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment; about sin, because they don’t believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to my Father, and y’all won’t see me any more; about judgment, because the prince of this world has been judged.

“I still have many things to tell y’all, but y’all can’t bear them now. However, when ʜᴇ, the Spirit of truth, has come, ʜᴇ will guide y’all into all truth, for ʜᴇ will not speak from ʜɪᴍꜱᴇʟꜰ; but whatever ʜᴇ hears, ʜᴇ will speak. Hᴇ will declare to y’all what is coming. Hᴇ will glorify me, for ʜᴇ will take from what is mine and will declare it to y’all. All things that the Father has are mine. That is why I said that ʜᴇ takes of mine and will declare it to y’all.

Jesus Tells of His Death and Resurrection

“In a little while, you will not see me. Then after a little while, you will see me again.”

Then some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘In a little while, y’all will not see me. Then after a little while, y’all will see me again,’ and, ‘Because I go to the Father’?” So they kept asking, “What does he mean by, ‘A little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”

Jesus knew what they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Are y’all asking each other about what I said, ‘In a little while, y’all will not see me. Then after a little while, y’all will see me again?’ Very truly I tell y’all that y’all will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. Y’all will be sorrowful, but y’all’s sorrow will be turned into joy. A woman, when she gives birth, has pain because her time has come. But when she has delivered the child, she doesn’t remember the anguish anymore, for the joy that a human being is born into the world. So also y’all have sorrow now, but I will see y’all again, and y’all’s heart will rejoice, and no one will take y’all’s joy away from y’all.

“On that day y’all will no longer ask me questions. Truly I tell y’all, whatever y’all may ask of the Father in my name, ʜᴇ will give it to y’all. Until now, y’all have asked nothing in my name. Y’all should ask, and y’all will receive, so that y’all’s joy may be complete.

“I have told y’all these things using figures of speech. But the time is coming when I won’t use figures of speech, but will tell y’all plainly about the Father. On that day y’all will ask in my name. I am not telling y’all that I will ask the Father for y’all, for the Father ʜɪᴍꜱᴇʟꜰ loves y’all because y’all have loved me and have believed that I came from God. I came from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.”

His disciples said to him, “Look, now you’re speaking plainly and not using figures of speech. Now we know that you know all things, and have no need for anyone to question you. By this we believe that you came from God.”

Jesus answered them, “Do y’all believe now? Look! A time is coming and has already come, when y’all will be scattered, each to their own place, and y’all will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. I have told y’all these things so that in me y’all may have peace. In the world y’all have oppression, but cheer up! I have conquered the world.”
