Clean and Unclean Food

Deuteronomy 14

Y’all are the children of YHWH y’all’s God. Y’all must not cut yourselves*, nor make shave a bald spot between y’all’s eyes for the dead. For you are a holy people to YHWH your God, and YHWH has chosen you to be a people for his own possession, above all peoples who are on the face of the earth.

You must not eat any abominable thing. These are the animals y’all may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat, the deer, the gazelle, the roebuck, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope, and the mountain sheep. Y’all may eat Every animal that divides the hoof and has the hoof split in two and chews the cud. Nevertheless of those that chew the cud, or have the hoof split, y’all may not eat: the camel, the hare, and the rabbit. Because they chew the cud but don’t divide the hoof, they are unclean to y’all. The pig, because it has a split hoof but doesn’t chew the cud, is unclean to y’all. Y’all must not eat their meat, and y’all must not touch their carcasses. Of everything in the waters, y’all may eat whatever has fins and scales. Y’all must not eat anything that doesn’t have fins and scales. It is unclean to y’all. y’all may eat and of the clean birds. But y’all must not eat from these: the eagle, the vulture, the buzzard, the red kite, the falcon, the kite of any kind, every kind of raven, the ostrich, the owl, the seagull, any kind of hawk, the little owl, the great owl, the horned owl, the pelican, the osprey, the cormorant, the stork, and kind of heron, the hoopoe, and the bat. All winged creeping things are unclean to y’all. They must not be eaten. Y’all may eat any winged creature that is clean.

Y’all must not eat anything that dies on its own. You may give it to the foreigner living among you who is within your gates for him to eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner. But you are a holy people to YHWH your God.

You must not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.

Tithes

You must take-take a tend of all your produce from your seed that comes from the field year by year. You are to eat before YHWH your God, in the place which he chooses to cause ʜɪꜱ name to dwell, the tithe of your grain, of your new wine, and of your oil, and the firstborn of your herd and of your flock, so that you may learn to fear YHWH your God always. If the way is too long for you, so that you are not able to carry it because the place which YHWH your God will choose to set ʜɪꜱ name there is too far from you, when YHWH your God blesses you, then exchange it for money, take the money in your hand, and go to the place that YHWH your God chooses. You may trade the money for whatever your soul desires: cattle, sheep, wine, beer, or whatever your soul asks of you. You are to eat there before YHWH your God, and rejoice, you and your household. You must not forsake the Levite who is within your gates, for he has no portion nor inheritance with you. At the end of every three years you are to bring all the tithe of your increase in the same year and store it within your gates. The Levite, because he has no portion nor inheritance with you, as well as the foreigner living among you, the fatherless, and the widow who are within your gates may come, and eat and be satisfied so that YHWH your God may bless you in all the work of your hand which you do.
