Laws for Burnt Offerings

Leviticus 1

YHWH called to Moses and spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting, saying, “You are to speak to the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘When any of y’all presents an offering to YHWH, y’all are to bring as your* offering an animal from the herd or the flock.

“‘If the offering is a burnt offering from the herd, a male without defect must be offered. It must be offered at the door of the Tent of Meeting for its acceptance before YHWH. He must lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him. He is to slaughter the bull before YHWH. Aaron’s sons, the priests, are to present the blood and sprinkle the blood around on the altar that is at the door of the Tent of Meeting. He must then skin the burnt offering and cut it into pieces. The sons of Aaron the priest are to put fire on the altar, and lay wood in order on the fire. Then Aaron’s sons, the priests, are to lay the pieces, the head, and the fat in order on the wood that is on the fire which is on the altar. The offer is to wash its innards and its legs with water. The priest must burn all of it on the altar, for a burnt offering, an food offering, a pleasant aroma to YHWH.

“‘If his offering is from the flock, from the sheep or from the goats, for a burnt offering, he is to offer a male without defect. He is to slaughter it on the north side of the altar before YHWH. Aaron’s sons, the priests, will splash its blood around on the altar. He is to cut it into its pieces, with its head and its fat. The priest will lay them in order on the wood that is on the fire which is on the altar, but the innards and the legs he is to wash with water. The priest will offer the whole, and burn it on the altar. It is a burnt offering, an food offering, a pleasant aroma to YHWH.

“‘If his offering to YHWH is a burnt offering of birds, then he is to present his offering from turtledoves or of young pigeons. The priest is to bring it to the altar, snap off its head, and burn it on the altar; and its blood is to be drained out on the side of the altar. He will remove its entrails and its feathers, and throw it on the east side of the alter at the place for ashes. He is to tear it open by its wings, but must not divide it. the priest is to burn it on the altar, on the wood that is on the fire. It is a burnt offering, an food offering, a pleasant aroma to YHWH.
